Feeling Important

Who doesn’t like to feel important? Could that be a possible reason Ananias and Sapphira pretended to give more than they did (Acts 5:1-11)? The sad truth is, many are elevating how they appear in man’s eyes, rather than finding comfort in seeing how important we are to God. Therefore, people go out of their way to generate ways to have man make them feel good.

They may compromise truth in order to have man pat them on the back. You can actually have people cheer you on when you defy authority. If Job would have cried out and cursed God, his wife could have then come up to him and said, “Good for you.” Wouldn’t that have made Job feel important? We know God was more important to him than man.

The point I want us to see is, we can, and should encourage each other (Eph. 5:29), but our main dependence is upon God. What if we get so caught up in social networks, we forget about the Lord? Could we be setting ourselves up for a fall? If my feeling of importance depends on how many “likes” I get on Facebook for my birthday or anniversary, what am I doing? What if only a few people “like” a comment you make – will that bring you down?

I often see people post “selfies”. I am not saying this is wrong, but I am suggesting that this may be a means to a fall if we are going out of our way to make ourselves feel important. If I pose for a picture and I get a thousand “likes”, will that make me feel important? It may. But what if I don’t get any likes?  Will that bring me down?

As odd as this article may sound, remember what Solomon wrote, “There is nothing new under the sun.” (Eccl. 1:9). People have wanted to feel important by changing up worship to focus on man and not the Lord. Let us not forget about the danger of losing our humility. Is one really feeling important in a humble way if one keeps going out of their way to say, “Notice how important I am”? Think about it.
